The unisuit is a one-piece garment with a fitted top and a trou-length bottom. All unisuits at JL Design are made to order for both individuals and teams.

The men's unisuit is cut in the classic "tank" style, has plenty of room around the arm , and extra length in the back to ensure total comfort.

The women's unisuit is made with a racer-back style with a front liner and bathing suit elastic around neck and armholes. JL's original "V-Front" waistline visually elongates the torso. The suit fits properly and is flattering. Then there is our new spaghetti suit which breaks all the rules... Order a matching JL Jogger to wear under your unisuit.

Pricing is based on quantity and style, not fabrics or size.

Unisuit Sizing

Team members are fit using JL Variable Sizing methods. We provide a team sizing sheet where you simply fill in the blanks. When your team receives its order, each athlete's garment is individually bagged, with his or her name enclosed on a card. There will be no guessing on your part as to which athlete gets which suit. Fill out and print our Men's or Women's Sizing Sheets.

Unisuits, Unitanks and Unitights

JL has developed Variable Sizing, a unique method that will provide you with the most exact fit for your body. Given accurate measurements, we guarantee that your suit will fit-- even if you have a super-long waist, huge quads, or a super broad back. At no extra charge, we will add an inch to your torso length, put a extra large top on a large bottom, or a small top on medium bottom.

We know that fit is key to any technical garment. That's why our garments are individually sized for athletes' bodies. Over the years we have developed a comprehensive sizing system that takes into account the many different body types in competitive sports, both on the water and on land.

JL garments are designed to perform. All training and racing clothing are made to be body-tight, insuring that there is no distracting fabric that flaps, nothing to get caught in the breeze, or the equipment, or one's hands during movement. A proper fit also brings out the technical properties of the fabrics that we use, maximizing wicking and insulation.

To this end, we have developed a system to fit the athlete, be he 6'8" with long legs and short back, or a woman who weighs 145 lbs., is 5'11", and has a super long torso. We can adjust for the kayaker who has a chest measuring 44", but a waist of 31". This is done when we receive your complete sizing information.

"JL all-in-ones (unisuits) are the best fitting Lycras we've found. The custom sizing is brilliant and the material is comfortable and good quality. The company is a refreshing pleasure to work with."

Toby Ayer
Secretary, Oxford Univ. BC

I didn't invent the unisuit. It existed in Europe years before I attended my first world championships. These suits, however, frightened me. The first time I saw a unisuit was on the Italian men's team at Lucerne in 1982. Made of bright blue nylon Lycra, this garment was ill-fit and revealed all. I remember dreading the moment when the men's pair-with ascended the podium to accept their gold medals. Arms above their heads, sweaty, nothing left to the imagination.

But the uni made sense, and I knew that I wanted to row in one. Since I first stepped in a boat at Stanford, I have worn everything from baggy sweats to thick wool bike shorts. Those of us in the sweep camp would watch in amazement (ouch, ouch, ouch) as we saw the scullers go by wearing their "Dolfin" running shorts in the boat. US team issue shorts were made of double-knit polyester -- not only were they extremely uncomfortable, but they could make the most sculptured thighs look like dumplings. On top the T's and tanks were almost considered the daily uniform. As our (endless) workouts ticked on, baggy cotton shirts would get heavier and saggier with sweat and/or rain. I would be in my Zen place, just about to achieve the perfect stroke when my thumb would catch on a flap of my tank top. I knew there had to be a better way. Enter the leotard, tight fitting, cool, moveable. However, big drawback-- that suit would crawl up where it didn't belong with each trip up the slide. How many times was the set of the boat compromised to a suffering, squirming rower? No one will ever know.

I spent years designing, developing and redesigning the unisuit so that a rower can do what he/she needs to do without distraction. In the last several years the suits have also come to reflect the personal style of a rower. Each new design request is a challenge, a new way to put all the pieces together and still have it fit right. I have enjoyed my part in facilitating the transition from practical and plain to flamboyant."
